About Ship 1876

What is the Sea Scout Program?

The Sea Scout program is an official program under the Boy Scouts of America for youths between the ages of 14 and 20.  It is a program intended to encourage youths to become better citizens and improve their maritime skills.  Sea Scouts are like a Venturing program with a seamanship focus.

Members who are between the ages of 14 and 20 are officially youth whereas members aged 21 and up are officially adults.  As a college-oriented ship, however, we make no distinction between youth and adult except in official situations.

Why are we a Sea Scout Ship?

Most people who join our group are already familiar with Boy Scouts and its high-adventure, but those that aren't familiar grasp the skills needed quickly.  Our founding members chartered a Sea Scout Ship to offer a Scouting program that would be new to some members.  Members who come to us from Sea Scout Ships back home join our ship to help teach other members how to become adept at sea.

Tell me more!

While we are primarily a university organization, we have been a Sea Scout Ship since the founding of National Eagle Scout Association, formerly, in 2003.  Currently, Sea Scout Ship 1876 is chartered with A&M United Methodist Church.

When you join SSS, you'll also join Sea Scout Ship 1876 and be a full-fledged Sea Scout!  It's not scary, we promise!  Many of us are still new to boating!

We have gone sailing and participated in various water sports such as canoeing. However, we also participate in trips such as backpacking, hiking, and bouldering. Recently we've explored the caves of Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico and climbed the mountainous terrain of Big Bend in south Texas.
